The whirlwind of the summer is winding down. The nights are starting to come faster as the sun sets earlier each day. I was riding my bike today. As I climbed up the tree lined dirt road, an agricultural scent drifted in and out, following me up the switchbacks that eventually took me to the top. As I crested the summit, the view opened up and I could see the ocean. And the smell of salt, dried grass and green pine trees took over.
I like climbing mountains on my bikes. There are few cars on the roads and If I’m on my mountain bike, I see less trail users the higher I go. The climbing effort gets my brain moving and fills my head with new ideas (many not so great ideas but, sometimes a good one finds it’s way in there). When I reach the top, I’m often met with something new.
When I met Cassie and Lindon, I was sitting on a bench listening to the music playing in front of the Mission. These two walked up and we started to talk. And they told me their story. What struck me most is that they had a strong friendship first, and then one day, a switch flipped. In school we talked about how a simple shift in our paradigm could alter every aspect of our lives (remember I have a degree in Sociology). Cassie said that one day she just new she loved Lindon. She told him. And she wasn’t sure what it meant. Well, he loved her back!
And she crested the mountain and filled her lungs with a fresh scent and her eyes with a new perspective, he was right there with her. Ready to marry her.
