PJ is 5 now. The kid would starve if I didn’t make him eat his breakfast each morning. I have no intentions of talking down the parental experience here but, I’m the one that has to say, “dude eat something (like the 9 different options I’m giving you) because you are being a rude bonking jerk.” With that he usually eats something and when he’s full, he snuggles up in a way that only a five year old can and talks to you. He laughs at snot jokes, the idea of hot dog eating competitions and tells stories that flow in and out of reality, imagination, possibility and hope in only the way a five year old can think. And accepting the thought process and capabilities of the person I spend the most time with has been a lesson in patience, kindness, reflection and thankfulness.
I understand why people don’t want these feelings and experiences to end. I understand why people want more kids as they start to grow and they stop doing, saying and thinking in the ways they do when they are little. It is a captivating experience. For Michelle and I, this is the last time we’ll have these moments. Which is why I’m trying to recognize and absorb as many of these experiences as possible.
And for this I am thankful for the great days, and especially, the great moments.
May is bike month here here in San Luis Obispo. In our house, this marks the beginning of summer. With summer comes Kidical Mass HERE. Kidical Mass is something all three of us look forward too each month as it is a time of goofy celebration and silly fun on bikes.
