Jessa and Bryan are in Maui right now. This is the time of year when I start to envy the honeymoon trips I’m hearing about. The tropical beaches, the lush green plants, blue clear water, warm days and cool beer. The last few years, Michelle and I have spent a week or so during the winter months recharging our lives in some sort of tropical city. Right before PJ was born, we did a trip to La Paz, which ended up being a very romantic 3rd world’ish vacation. We walked mile after mile through the city and around the beach front. Sampling local vendors and enjoying each other. There was a lot of freedom traveling without a kiddo or time frame. I remember falling madly deeply in love again and again with Michelle on that trip. When the hurry and bustle of responsibility is put away and replaced with laughter, margaritas, pico de gallo, hand made tortillas and guacamole, week long walks and soft kisses – it becomes easy to really see the one you love.
Since we’ve had PJ, trips are not the same. He is a remarkable traveler with many stamps in his passport and only a couple of airport meltdowns on his record. We are showing him the world and he remembers so much of what he sees. I used to be afraid of how a child would interfere with my life and how he might pull Michelle and my attention away from each other. And he does but, he also brings so much joy that it more than makes up for any difficulty Michelle and I have in carving out time for just us.
So, we take trips whenever possible. Even a few days is enough to get back in touch with each other and to remind us why we fell in love in the first place. Our bond is stronger now than it has ever been. And as each year passes, I’m more in love with Michelle than the year previous.
Come on holiday….I’m ready!
